Indian side dishes and what you need to know when ordering them

One of the most important parts of a complete Indian meal is a proper side dish that will go along with it. It is not enough to just order a plateful of chicken or goat cooked in gravy or some tandoori. You need to know what sides to order when which will then help in making the meal a complete one.

Well if you are thinking about what side dishes that you should typically order when going for Indian lunch at home then the first thing that you will have to do is order from the Nirvana Cambridge lunch buffet and these are the side dishes that you should know about:

  1. One very common side dish is rice. Plain white rice or basmati rice is a particular favourite. You can have this with any item that contains a lot of gravy, especially on the runny side. For example if you are going for curry dishes like goat, then it is a must to have rice along with it. Rice cannot be enjoyed with dry dishes. If you are going for heavy and creamy dishes, rice will work well as well.
  2. Indian breads like nans and chapattis are something that a lot of people enjoy. These work well when you are going for dishes with gravy but which are on the creamier side. Tandoori roti and nans are great options for these. However if you are opting for say lentil soup and a typical paneer or vegetable preparation then you should ideally go for chapattis since they are light and they can perfectly complement the texture of lentil soup and the vegetables. Chapattis are side dishes that can actually go well with anything and everything and these are quite healthy too.
  3. Well one of the most famous Indian dishes is definitely biriyani. Prepared with rice and chicken or mutton, this biriyani is a complete dish that makes for a lovely lunch or dinner. Biriyanis can get quite dry and heavy and hence in order to balance that you need to have a side of raita. Prepared with rice and freshly chopped vegetables like cucumber and tomatoes and even onions, raita is a must for anyone who knows how to enjoy their biriyani. The cooling effect of the curd works nicely with the spices of the biriyani which makes it easier to digest and better to taste.
  4. Do you simply love to enjoy your lentil soup and curry vegetables along with the some chapatti? Well then you have to order a side of mixed pickle which is made with assorted fruits and vegetables marinated for day in oil and other spices. These are extremely flavourful and spicy and add a nice flavour to your plate.
  5. If you like to keep it tangy then after you are done with the main course, opt for some mango chutney which is prepared with unripe mangoes in sugary syrup. This acts a fantastic palate cleanser.

So, these are some of the most common side dishes that you have to know about if you want to place the right order for your Indian meal.

Boston finally has a great Indian restaurant. Excellent food, attentive service, modern decor. This will be my go-to Indian restaurant in the future. The restaurant is unfortunately located right in between Harvard and Porter Squares, which means a good bit of walking from a subway station and parking is challenging in Cambridge in general.

Great Indian food, friendly staff and a great value. Their lunch buffet is maybe the best value in the neighborhood. I sampled a lot of different dishes at the buffet, both veggie and meat based, and they were all great. I'd definitely recommend this spot for Indian food, especially for their lunch buffet.
